About the Palestine Fair Trade Association
The Palestine Fair Trade Association (PFTA) is a Palestinian national union of fair trade producing cooperatives, processors, and exporters.
Based in Jenin, the PFTA promotes social accountability in the production and trade process in Palestine through fair trade ideas and practices. PFTA also works to establish locally understandable fair trade guidelines and standards that concern Palestinian products that are in sync with international fair trade standards, pre-qualifies Palestinian producers and products for internationally recognized Fair Trade certification standards. Among the PFTA’s other goals and projects are enabling women and other marginalized groups especially in rural areas though economic and social empowerment programs, Increasing international market access to Palestinian producers through fair trade and natural products channels, promoting environmental friendly farming practices and support conversion into certified organic farming, and creating opportunities for Palestinian grassroots and small holders can cultivate international solidarity and support.
JVP has partnered with the Palestine Fair Trade Association for our Trees of Reconciliation project because we believe the PFTA is in the best position to work with farmers in the West Bank to ensure that the olive saplings donated through our campaign are distributed to those with the most urgent needs; that the trees will be grown cooperatively and by farmers who have pledged to honor fair trade practices; that the trees we plant will not be bulldozed or stolen by settlers; that the trees we plant will maximize the chances that Palestinian land will not be further confiscated under the “fallow field” law (any field that lies fallow for three years is subject to seizure by the Israeli government pursuant to a revived Ottoman statute).
