JVP-Chicago: September 2007 Calendar JVP-Chicago Event Calendar: September 2007 JVP-Chicago -- members and friends: Set the sins of occupation ablaze at our 3rd annual Tashlich event Sunday, September 16 3:00 pm Dammrich Rowing Center 3220 W. Oakton Skokie Traditional Rosh Hashanah refreshments will be served and all people of good will are welcome to join JVP-Chicago for tthis event. About Tashlich: Traditional and Alternative For centuries, Jews have been casting their "sins": into the water during Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, in a ceremony called "Tashlich." For most Jews, this is a personal act of contrition, symbolized by throwing bits of stale bread into a river or lake. But this year, members of JVP-Chicago will set small paper boats ablaze briefly and cast them into the water. Each boat will represent a transgression inherent in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. These transgressions will include such things as land theft, demolishing homes, killing innocent civilians and the indiscriminate use of weapons such as cluster bombs. Tashlich -JVP-Chicago style -- is a meaningful way to recommit oneself to the struggle to change the US policies that support the crimes and tragedies of occupation.
