Who will stand up against Hagee's anti-Semitism?

Controversial Pastor John Hagee's anti-Semitic and bigoted statements were not enough to compel Senator Lieberman not to go to Hagee's sponsored Christians United For Israel (CUFI) Conference. Jewish Voice for Peace activists sent over 2,400 protest emails and gathered over 500 signatures on a statement from concerned Christians and Jews--sponsored by JVP, JewsOnFirst, and the Institute for the Study of Christian Zionism--asking the Senator not to go. J-Street collected additional signatures as well, on a parallel petition.

A recent poll by J-Street found that in the American Jewish community, 57 percent of those polled had an unfavorable impression of Hagee, and by a 4-to-1 margin they said that Jewish organizations and leaders should not form alliances with CUFI. A recently released documentary by JewsOnFirst highlights Hagee's preoccupation with the Jews.

Senator Lieberman continued last year's unfortunate metaphor, comparing pastor Hagee to Moses (see text of his full speech here).

At the CUFI Conference, Hagee mixed End-Times prophecies with lobbying, expressing his opposition to a land-for peace settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Despite Hagee's repeated bigoted views and lack of support among American Jews, the Pastor still enjoys the support of San Antonio, Rabbi Aryeh Scheinberg, and Dan Gillerman, the outgoing Israeli ambassador to the United Nations.

The Anti-Defamation League does not condemn Hagee's anti-Semitism either. Unbelievably, in a recent letter Abe Foxman, ADL's National Director told John Hagee that the ADL "… wholeheartedly support your efforts to eradicate anti-Semitism…" It is not too late to ask the Anti-Defamation League to take a stand against defamation.
