SUNDAY MAY 4, 7:00 PM
Knowledge is the Beginning
A documentary describing the joint efforts of two legendary figures, composer Daniel Berenboim and the late Palestinian academic Edward Said, as they bring together young Arab and Israeli orchestra musicians for a concert to promote peace, while confronting the effects of separation, misinformation and mistrust within the orchestra and outside it. This tremendously moving film culminates in a concert for peace in Ramallah. The film will be shown in its entirety, and is approximately 90 minutes.
SUNDAY MARCH 30, 7:00 PM
Encounter Point
This highly popular and acclaimed documentary chronicles the efforts of members of the Parents Circle and Bereaved Families Forum, a grassroots group of Israelis and Palestinians who have lost family members to the conflict. Despite their loss and suffering, these people have chosen to come together in solidarity and friendship to work towards an end to the killing and conflict. The film follows several members of the Circle as they meet with each other, and with their fellow Palestinians and Israelis, documenting their approaches to communication, reconciliation, and healing.
Guest speaker: In order to show the film in its entirety, we will not have a guest speaker for this month's meeting. However, we will be having the post-film discussion, which will include members of the chapter who have met with members of the Parents Circle and Bereaved Families Forum.
SUNDAY FEBRUARY 24, 7:00 PM
The Role of the Netzanim
This program will start with Part 4 of "Land of the Settlers," the controversial Israeli television documentary series. The film shows the debate over the disengagement plan of Israeli settlers from Gaza, the daily life of settlers, interviews with Palestinian leaders, and footage of the settlers' political and sometimes violent resistance to the disengagement plan. The program will continue with short video clips, analysis and discussion of the current crisis in Gaza, including information on solidarity actions such as the Israeli Solidarity Convoy.
Guest speaker: Mitchell Plitnick, former Director of Policy for Jewish Voice for Peace, columnist for Tikkun magazine, and frequent commentator in the national media on issues related to Israel and Palestine.
