One more reason to support divestment from Caterpillar
[Oakland, April 3, 2008] Jewish Voice for Peace condemns the relentless destruction of Palestinian homes by the Israeli occupation. News came in from the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD) this morning that the Hamdan family home, rebuilt during the 2007 Constructing Peace Summer Camp, has been demolished. Jeff Halper, founder and Coordinator of ICAHD, was arrested for attempting to resist the demolition, but released soon after. We understand at this point in time that no charges will be pressed against him.
Our hearts go out to the Hamdan family.
Caterpillar knows its bulldozers are used to destroy Palestinian homes. Caterpillar, a US company is a publicly held company that does not follow its own internal guidelines for corporate responsibility and must be held accountable.
Given Caterpillar’s disregard for the lives of Palestinians, JVP has launched a campaign to encourage large Christian institutions with corporate holdings of Caterpillar to divest.
On April 23-May 2nd, the United Methodist Church will be holding a General Conference to vote on a number of resolutions that would divest their interests in Caterpillar and from other companies that profit from the Israeli occupation.
Jewish Voice for Peace would like to thank the Methodists for taking steps that are courageous and supportive of Jews who want peace and justice in the Middle East.
